Honoring our veterans has been a long-standing tradition in the United States. Since the first Armistice Day celebration on November 11, 1919, veterans have been honored on that day each year. The Veterans Day observance in Birmingham, Alabama, November 11, 1947, was the first year the event was changed to Veterans Day (from Armistice Day) and signed into legislation by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, June 1, 1954. It's the one day each year that family, friends and the U.S. populous in general celebrate those deceased and living military hero's who so proudly served our country.
